Cornell Club of Boston Annual Keynote Reception

  • Mount Auburn Cemetery 580 Mount Auburn Street Cambridge, MA, 02138 United States (map)

Please join us for the Cornell Club of Boston’s premier event of the year, the Annual Keynote Reception, where you can enjoy connecting with fellow Cornellians over heavy appetizers and drinks in the Story Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery. Sarah Balik '15, DVM '19 is our keynote speaker and is an Associate Veterinarian at the New England Aquarium. Hundreds of cold-stunned turtles get stranded on the shores of Cape Cod. Dr. Balik will tell us how the New England Aquarium impacts the rescue and care for native and endangered sea turtles and the efforts to return them back to the ocean.

The Annual Meeting will include a summary of the CCOB's events over the past year, voting on this year’s slate of Cornell Club of Boston board members and some CCOB updates for the months ahead.

About the Speaker:

Dr. Sarah Balik graduated from CALS (B.S. in Animal Science) in 2015 and from the College of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in 2019, with a dual degree MPH via Cornell’s program with the University of Minnesota. She is now an Associate Veterinarian at the New England Aquarium. The Animal Health team at the aquarium is responsible for the veterinary care of the aquarium's resident animals (such as fish, sharks, penguins, and seals) as well as rescued wild sea turtles through the rescue and rehabilitation program.

While Dr. Balik's love for aquatic animals started long before her time at Cornell, Cornell provided many opportunities that were pivotal to her training and pursuing this career, including volunteering at the Janet L. Swanson Wildlife Hospital, interning for the Jane Goodall Institute in Uganda through Engaged Cornell, and traveling to the Belize Zoo with Cornell’s veterinary team. She participated in clinical rotations around the country to learn about aquatic animal medicine and rehabilitation.

After veterinary school, she moved to Boston for a post-graduate training program (internship) in small animal medicine and surgery at Angell Animal Medical Center. She later completed training programs at the University of Florida (aquatic animal health specialty internship) and National Aquarium (fellowship) before moving back to the Boston area to work at New England Aquarium.
