This event is presented by the Cornell Club of New Hampshire.
Come visit the Shoals Marine Lab and Celia Thaxter's garden on Appledore island. Enjoy a day trip out of Portsmouth NH or make it a full weekend and stay on Appledore overnight, returning to Portsmouth on Sunday.
Daytrippers will get lunch. Overnighters will get lunch, dinner, and brunch. This event is not recommended for children.
More information
The Shoals Marine Lab trip starts and ends with a scenic boat ride out of Portsmouth Harbor, showing off the coast and islands as the Piscataqua River joins the Atlantic ocean. Depending on the weather, the ship might detour to observe seal or gull colonies at the Isles of Shoals. Once on the island, there will be an orientation tour of the educational and living facilities of the laboratory. There is also the historic site of Celia Thaxter's garden, now maintained by volunteers. Visitors will have time to explore the island trails that vary from the wooded sections inland to rocky inter-tidal zones. Visitors may stay on well-maintained trails or those seeking an adventure may delve into wilder zones, risking encounters with gulls and poison ivy. For people staying overnight, you may be invited to a lecture or movie showing in the evening, depending on the programming for the weekend (details forthcoming). One of the best parts of the trip is finding a hammock on the porch, or a boulder by the sea, on which to rest and take in the sites and sounds of the island.
Everyone should have sun protection, good walking shoes, a water bottle, and a camera. A sketch pad or other quite activity fits the traditions of the island and is a good back up if the weather is uncooperative.
Overnight guests will stay in simple dormitories. A sleeping bag is recommended.
