Please join fellow Cornellians in a discussion with Professor Savin-Williams, a national expert on bullying and adolescent development.
Topic: What used to be seen as an unfortunate but inevitable aspect of childhood has become an issue of major concern to communities across the country. A spate of suicides among young people - Phoebe Prince in South Hadley, MA, Tyler Clementi in New Jersey, a series of teen suicides in a Minnesota suburb - has caused school districts to rush to implement anti-bullying programs, sometimes at great cost. In 2010, local legislation - the Massachusetts Anti-Bullying bill - was passed in response.
• Despite all the media coverage, what do we really know about bullying?
• Does the way adolescents talk about and perceive bullying differ from the way parents and authorities perceive it?
• What approaches work to deter and stop intimidation and abuse?
For questions about this event, please contact Calicia Mullings in the Cornell Northeast Regional Office. For additional information about Ritch Savin-Williams please visit his College of Human Ecology Bio Page.
