"The Truth about Liars: Deception in the Networked Age"
with Jeff Hancock, Associate Professor of Communication at Cornell University
- You answer a personal ad that seems promising: tall, self-employed, single...he sounds like a great catch! After a few email exchanges filled with witty banter, you show up for the date; he's shorter, balder, and "freelancing - between work engagements." Oh, and he's also married, but he assures you he and his wife are "basically separated."
- You "friend" your college pal on Facebook; wow, she looks fantastic! She must really take care of herself; you remind yourself to hit the gym. You see her at Reunion and realize her profile photos were taken a couple of years (and 15 pounds) ago. And, apparently, from a great distance.
Lying - we all do it. Deception is one of the most significant and pervasive social phenomena of our age. At the same time, technologies have pervaded almost all aspects of human communication. The intersection between deception and information technology gives rise to questions about deception in the digital age. How does communication technology change the way we deceive others? Why and how do people lie in online dating? Can people detect if they are being lied to in an email? Can computer programs identify word patterns that reveal whether someone is lying or not? On February 17, Jeff Hancock will examine these questions and describe some recent research that may shed some light on the answers.
