Join us to hear Scott Carman talk about how his Boston-based landscape architecture firm, c2|studio, is helping a Chinese developer create the ultimate low-impact landscape for a large-scale urban residential development in Hangzhou, China. Scott Carman is a registered landscape architect and holds a Master’s Degree in landscape architecture from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design and a B.S. in Environmental Horticulture from Cornell University. His academic honors include the Oscar Cutler Scholarship and the Charles A. Ring Memorial Award for highest academic achievement. His prior experience includes project management and design work at such renowned firms as Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates, Martha Schwartz Partners, and Hargreaves Associates. Scott is highly skilled in design representation using digital media, which is also the topic of a graduate-level course he teaches in the Landscape Architecture department at the Rhode Island School of Design. scholarships and fellowships
6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Description: Thanks to revolutionary advances in genetics and genomics research, science is advancing treatment for killer diseases like cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's and perhaps even cures. How do stem cells and cloning play a part in these medical possibilities? What exactly are stem cells, how are they useful, and what is the controversy all about? Because the body's immune system typically rejects foreign cells, cloning enters the picture by enabling scientists to personalize tissue made from stem cells for use in therapy. Learn how cloning works, how therapeutic cloning is different from cloning an entire organism like Dolly the sheep, what therapeutic treatment promises, what some are hyping, and what some of the risks are. Explore some of the ethical issues surrounding stem cell research and cloning involving policy and regulatory legislation, public disclosure, and privacy. Is it more unethical not to use these means to find cures for diseases? Join the discussion.
